ULYSSES JOURNEYS FOR LIVE ELECTRONICS COMPOSING VOL 1. by Studio Tallinn 1
965\, Erica Synth and ensemble EMA\nLive electronics has become an essenti
al tool for music making for (not only) the younger generation of musician
s worldwide. It has contributed to democratization of music making\, allow
ing people with no classic education of interpreters or composing to stage
s in various genres. !It has also contributed a lot to the group of 'hybri
d' performer/composer to emerge both on the underground experimental and a
lso 'classical' contemporary music scene. Yet in the contemporary music sc
ene composing for performers with live electronics especially for live ele
ctronic ensembles is still not very widely spread among classically educat
ed composers. It is mainly due to a certain conservative mindset in some c
onservatories but mainly also because of a lack of qualified teachers in t
he field yet of good knowledge-base and experience in both working with li
ve electronic compositions and performance practice. The workshop led by E
MA in partnership with Erica Synths is designed for composers who want to
dive into composing for live electronics ensemble\, encouraging composers
with no previous experience on the field as well as the ones with some exp
erience to join. \n“Tallinn 1965” is an open experimental\, multifunctiona
l analog music studio. Alongside modern phonics\, analog devices from deca
des ago are also put to work for recording sounds (professional old-time s
tudio tape recorders) as well as creating music (classical oscillators\, f
ilters\, echo machines). We approach music through the concrete artifacts
and technological layers that range from hardware to software processes th
at have been part of the circulation of time and memory that condition the
knowledge\, but also the perceptions\, and the sensations. \nAcclaimed en
semble EMA (Estonian Electronic Music Society's Ensemble) was founded in 2
017 and currently consists of 5 musicians with different classical educati
on backgrounds (composition\, different interpretation studies) as well as
with backgrounds from various experimental music scenes. Ensemble has bee
n active performing and composing live electronic works and has lead sever
al workshops addressing related problems including: notation for electroni
 c music\, technical setups\, sound synthesis\, etc. www.emamusic.ee \n \nT
opics of the workshop \n-Live electronic instrument. What is it? How to de
fine it\, how to classify? \n-Sound design as one of the key issues of wor
king with electronics. Challenges of how to find a common ground between c
omposer and performer in composing for 'unknown' nonstandardized instrumen
tarium \n- Different notation options for compositions with live electroni
c performance \n-Technical obstacles working with electronic setups. Mappi
ng possibilities\, challenges \n- Syncing performers in real time. Options
  of different metronomes\, Vclick app \nSchedule \nMarch 22 \nSession 1. 1

NEYS FOR LIVE ELECTRONICS COMPOSING VOL 2. \nWorkshop will take place from
May 8-10 2026 in ECCM Tallinn at Studio Tallinn 1965. \nThis workshop is
a hands-on laboratory with EMA (Estonian Electronic Music Society Ensemble
) for development of material brought by participants. 6 participants are
chosen with an open call. The participants present their preliminary ideas
\, sketches\, conceptions to address questions of conception\, sound desig
n and instrumentation. \nThe call is open March 25 to April 8.2026.
